Excerpts

The images presented on the pages of Cracow - Sketches for a Portrait of the City were created over many years of an artistic co-operation between two photographers, who share fascination both in the magic of black & white photography and Kraków itself, and whose master has been Henri Cartier-Bresson. In the photographs by Krzysztof Kurzyd這 and Jerzy Pirecki, many scenes which might seem ordinary attain a symbolic quality.
Owing to the play of light, unknown and seemingly ordinary courtyards become magical places. The city weaves labyrinths of shadows, cast in dark stripes of decaying plaster - you see a mysterious and fabulous world that is akin to painting. Streaks of light sink in the rust of gutters, carving shades of gray on textures of walls and architectural details.
Door handles and latches ask the question; what is beyond?

NOWO傲
Krzysztof Kurzyd這 - Born in Cracow, in 1957. A graduate of the Cracow Technical University, he turned to photography and made it his profession. He collects and restores antique cameras among which are almost century-old specimens.
In the late 1980s he participated in photographic workshops conducted by Robert Sauer in the Cultural Club Dworek Bia這pr康nicki, where he first met Jerzy Pirecki. Krzysztof Kurzyd這 combines practice and theory: his pictures and articles devoted to photography have been published in many periodicals.

Jerzy Pirecki - Born in Cracow, in 1955. After graduating from the Cracow Academy of Agriculture he worked at his alma mater for ten years. Together with Krzysztof Kurzyd這 he established a photographers collective 5+, the activity of which resulted in a dozen or so exhibitions. The two have been collaborating ever since. They are fascinated by the photography from the 1950s and the 1960s, which, they believe, was the era when photography as a medium flourished. Their work has always been inspired by the style of that period. His passion turned into an occupation - and since the early 1990s Jerzy Pirecki has been working as a professional photographer. He collaborates with the press and exhibits his work.
